We have published (and verified) the smart contract on the METIS Andromeda chain:

We are well aware, that the METIS community is much smaller than the broad layer-1 NFT crowd and have chosen a less ambitious approach:

1. There are only 333 issues of the art
2. The price was set to 3.33 $METIS (which cooks down to roughly $75 for trees per NFT)
3. We have already started planting out of our own pockets with trees4humanity.org, because we believe this mint will take some time

Also – the craze around NFTs has cooled down tremendously. Nonetheless are NFTs, what they are meant to be: certificates, that own something. And with our METIS drop, you own the fact, that you support the fight against climate change with a nice piece of art.

An NFT drop without community does not work at all, so we have involved partners and friends to shill this drop. We have also given away 21 NFTs to these friends. Very happy for that. Internally we have calculated with 300 sales (around 20k US$) and will hopefully reach that within a few days, if the community picks it up.

This time, we rely on “shilling” by friends and partners, who we personally know and contacted. Besides one or the other NFT, they got nothing but pure action for trees and of course our attention for their work and plans, which we will support in the months to come. So – watch out for less carbon, more sustainability and solid blockchain technologies to come!

In summary, I (we) have now learned, how to handle smart contracts (in Solidity) well on various chains or Layer-2 solutions. We have developed simple “Dapps” and I have also held an introduction presentation at the university about this earlier this week. We are now “Web3 savy”, so to speak

There might be a crypto winter ahead or not, the technology is just starting to flock and the next 12 months will be a fantastic time to build things that make lives easier, better or just more interesting.

We are progressing with the release of our “Ukrainian artist for the climate” NFT on the layer-2 solution METIS.io – a smaller community, but very active.

I have started a list on twitter, to filter especially for METIS-affin crypto-specialists.

We have finished our smart contract a while ago and wanted to wait for our friends of Peak Finance, Underworld DAC, Pixelwooks, ClimateGuardians and others to proceed with their work, so we have a more closed front to reach the public. Thanks to our friends here again – you rock!

Now to the process of deploying a smart contract on a different ERC based network. Thank heavens, there is REMIX, a web app that allows you to test and work in Solidity, the development language of the Ethereum network.

The code of a smart contract on METIS is 100% the same to a smart contract on the layer-1 Ethereum network. Took me a bit to understand, but it is really that simple. If your smart contract works on layer-1, you can copy and paste it for METIS, too (I have gathered more details on the whole blockchain lingo in my presentation for the University of Münster last week).

All you need to do, is use remix to inject the Andromeda main net of METIS and deploy your contract there. Remix is offering that options via a drop down field – injected Web3 provider:

For us as “envoverse”, the METIS chain offers some very nice and interesting aspects:

• the gas fees are super low
• the transactions cost MUCH less carbon
• the transaction is much faster
• the data is “portable” – meaning you can move your currency around (wrapped)

and so we are proceeding with the deployment in the next few days and will send out notifications of the drop to our mailing list and other social media channels.

In that time, the ETH rates went from around $3,500 per ETH down to $1,200. The NFT trading volume went down to 20% of what it was and major players went bankrupt. Also, in the last few days, the crypto scene is recovering a bit, alongside the economy.

The target audience is “students of economy and business administration”, so I do not want to bore them into sleep by being too nerdy or too technical.

The presentation is an overview of technology, a journey through the lingo and specific words the crypto scene loves to sprinkle into the mix.

Intro

When we started envoverse earlier this year, the whole crypto scene was in spasmodic emotional overdrive. The BAYC craze was peaking and the ETH coin was at $3,000. Before that, NFT projects like the Pudgy Penguins or the CryptoPunks ranked in millions of dollars in only a few days.

We knew, that we were not deep enough into the scene and a little bit late to the game. Also, our goals have been different from the beginning.

We put emphasis on the utility and focused on that: “Raise money to fight climate change“. Our co-founder and ubergeek Danish designed a nice Blender 3D character for the Metaverse – the ENVO – and we sketched our first draft of the whitepaper. When we were ready, Russia invaded the Ukraine and the coins started to go downhill. Crypto shifted, together with the stock market, within hours to a lower gear.

So, dropping 10k characters for the Metaverse led to around 300 mints and we decided to limit the over all amount of ENVOs to 333.

Now we are preparing our 3rd NFT drop after we did some technical testing and smaller art projects to get deeper into NFTs and the crypto space altogether.

What is an NFT really?

An NFT is an entry into the public database (ledger) of a blockchain. As a non-fungible token, that is stored in public, non-fakeable and capable of carrying information, it was (in our understanding) abused from the beginning by the marketing machines out there. So we coined the phrase: “the NFT is not the art, it is only the certificate that you own the art”.

In that manner, we do think that NFTs are just starting out as a technology and that the cleansing of the past weeks will trigger better implementations of it.

Our take on it remains: NFTs are a great tool to hand out receipts for payments. On the long run, they might be used by the tax authorities for exactly that reason: not fakeable, hard to loose.

New round, new blockchain, less carbon

The upcoming NFT on METIS is now our (small) next step to implement more of what we learned since the beginning of the year.

So far, we have:

1. Defined the purpose of the NFT (aka. utility): save the world!
2. Donated money to an Ukrainian artist, who then made us an unique picture for the drop
3. Created a smart contract, that works on the METIS chain
4. Coded the pages that will start the minting process
5. Moved some money to METIS, just so we can test our own food

Additionally – and I think that is the most important learning so far – people will not just mint, because your utility is good (there is no better utility, that saving the planet, IMHO), but because others will recommend the drop in their channels.

Marketing is everything (if you have solid artwork)

With successful drops in the past few weeks, we see a common denominator in getting your crypto project out to the world: the opinion leaders (or at least some of them) out there must recommend it and even buy into it. Strong wallets buying your NFT or using your service, analytical minds with strong follower numbers mentioning you… activities like that must take place.

We have seen it in goblintown.wtf and even borderline rug-pulls like azuki.com – great art, but more importantly promoted by strong names. That second part is now our task for the next days to come.

By choosing the layer-2 solution $METIS, we also take a little risk, because it takes some dedication to integrate it into your wallet and it requires trust into the team of that layer-2 chain – but it was necessary. METIS is using so much less carbon, that we had the feeling we need to go that route.

In order to reach new audiences we have now teamed up with cool names in the crypto scene to help us get the word out. This is the first milestone of prepping an NFT with the help of partners on the marketing side:

Especially METIS experts like the UnderworldDAC or PEAK Finance are crucial this time around. We are now creating traffic and educational content like this to get your eyeballs and your brain on this coming drop.

On the other hand are significantly less people on METIS and the network is a bit less documented.

So let us give you a short overview of the technology:

• Metis verifies transactions en bloc with what they call “rangers” – de facto a “proof of stake” solution to save power and thus carbon
• Metis has its own “coin”, which can be found on exchanges under “MetisDAO” or “$METIS”
• Metis runs on a separate network, called Andromeda. So you have to switch your wallet over. Read the how-to below.

Getting the coin – $metis

As a “layer-2” solution, you can say: There is no $METIS (they call their coin that way) without ETH.

The first thing you must do to buy the ForeverMetis NFT is to have some ETH (0.2 is enough at the moment – June 2022).

With your ETH wallet, you go to Uniswap and change the ETH to $METIS:

Make sure, you pick the right “$METIS (MetisDAO)” coin on Uniswap!

You have now $Metis coins on the Ethereum Mainnet where you can hold them, if you believe in the further development of this solution.

It is a solid “Altcoin”, so you might want to keep a few of those and buy more than 0.2 ETH – the founders of Metis are there for the long-run, as you can see in their whitepapers.

Now you need to push your $METIS from the ETH Mainnet to the Andromeda network.

That is done on their bridging application on  https://bridge.metis.io/home or alternatively on https://tethys.finance/bridge – both are fine!

You go there, connect your wallet and push the $METIS from the ETH Mainnet to the Metis Andromeda network.

You are almost there.

Adding the METIS Andromeda network to MetaMask

Once you have swapped the coins from the ETH Mainnet to Andromeda, you probably want to SEE how much $METIS you have in your wallet.

If you are on Metamask, you need to ADD the Andromeda network to Metamask.

For that, there is (thankfully) ”Chainlist.org” – a site, that does this with a few clicks.

Once you added the network to your wallet, you are good to go AND you should see the amount of $METIS you have in your wallet.

The founder Fernando understood well, how we try to raise money on the blockchain to fund projects like his and started to plant trees in our name right away. With this partnership we can also start to document specific projects and get photos of the progress.

We especially like the fact, that the organization is employing local workers to plant trees and gives them paid work by doing so. That helps to fight poverty and helps the climate in one fell swoop!

So, let’s go…

1. Understand the process

A lot of new and confusing terms are flying through the Internet when it comes to Blockchain and NFT technology. Allow us, to demystify some of them:

• NFT: The non-fungible token is nothing else than a license certificate. Like a “vehicle title”. Or in other terms: NFT is not the artwork, it is the certificate, that you own the artwork.
• Wallet: This is tricky, because a crypto-wallet is not really holding any (crypto) money. A Wallet in the “crypto world” is only the “password” to access the money, which is sitting on a specific spot on the Blockchain.
• Security: Because a Wallet is just a (long, complicated) password to access your money and NFTs, there are endless schemes, frauds and attacks happening right now in that field. All these attacks and frauds are basically cooking down to 1 thing: getting your money.
  So: read under (2), what you can do to be safe!

If you understood this, the core process is easy to follow:

1. You must own a wallet for the Blockchain of your choice (currently NFTs are sold on different Blockchain variations). The most famous ones are for example: Ethereum, Polygon, Solana or Cardano. Please note, that these variations need their own “Wallets”. For the envoverse NFT, you need an Ethereum wallet and we always recommend “Metamask”.
2. You have to have money “in” your Wallet. In order to get money into it, you need an “Exchange”, which allows you to transfer “real money” (some call it FIAT) into your wallet. Exchanges are the gatekeepers of the financial world and some well-respected ones are: Kraken.com, Binance.com, Bitpanda.com or Coinbase.com.
3. You can buy an NFT now with the crypto-money in your Wallet. There are “direct” sales and “marketplaces” to buy an NFT. While early “direct sales” (on VIP lists or Whitelist sales) promise more profit on your invest, you have to be careful, that you do not fall for a false offer (rug pull). Once the direct sales started, people trade with NFTs on marketplaces like OpenSea.io.

2. Get a secure Wallet

The best way to deal with cryptocurrency and NFTs is a good, stable and secure Wallet. Handle it like your homebanking application: carefully and be sure, you never give access to it carelessly.

• Get the right wallet for your Blockchain. For Ethereum or Polygon we strongly recommend Metamask.io, which works as a nice browser plugin.
  If you trust Exchanges enough, you can also just keep an “Online Wallet” with one of the Exchanges mentioned!
• During the creation of your Wallet, you will be presented with a “recovery phrase” OR a “private key”. Please make sure, you do not share this phrase or key. Print it, note it and put it into a safe place. Make sure, if your house burns down or there is a break-in, you will not lose that.
• Consider having 2 wallets: One for your daily crypto dealings, where you never hold more money that you can lose without going bankrupt. A second one, which you will use to hold your investments. There are other concepts, but whatever you do, do never store the passwords of your “big” wallet online, in the cloud or on your computer.

3. Load Money Into Your Wallet

You need an Exchange to transfer money from your bank account or credit card into cryptocurrency. We have mentioned Kraken.com, Binance.com, Bitpanda.com or Coinbase.com.

There you can “buy cryptocurrency” and transfer it out to your own Wallet.

4. Select An NFT To Buy

There are basically 3 ways to get an NFT:

• Direct sale: You buy directly on the website of an NFT artist or company. There you just must be sure, you are in the right place. It is a good idea to read up on the project, before you buy.
• Marketplaces: Marketplaces like OpenSea.io or LooksRare.org allow you to trade NFTs (second market).
• Peer2Peer: If you personally know the seller of an NFT, you can deal completely “outside” the Internet, if you like. That form is rare, but mostly used by galleries, artists with friends or private collectors of NFT art. You MUST be sure, that the seller is real!

5. Purchase an NFT

The purchase process for most NFT sales are automated. The ownership of the “NFT certificate” is publicly noted on the Blockchain. So, when you buy one, normally cryptocurrency goes from your Wallet to the Wallet of the seller (or Marketplace). The ownership of the NFT is then transferred to your Wallet. Programs like Metamask then also allow you to add the NFT to your Wallet to display your collection.
